     January Member of the Month-DoubleTrouble!

Recognition of Team SEWA MembersSLEEPYKRAMER writes "First, I would like to thank everyone for their patience while the MOM committee took a little hiatus to sit back and get organized.

Secondly, I would like to welcome you to SEWA’s January Member of the Month: DoubleTrouble

DoubleTrouble, SEWA’s own Dave DePriest was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and now resides in Grand Rapids, Michigan…..yipes! That’s a bit of a climate change!

David started playing darts in 1982 at the age of nine, when his mother introduced him to the game. In the beginning, darts was just recreation time with the family, but by age eleven, David had competed in his first tournament, placing in the semi-finals of the Adult Men’s Singles event. By age thirteen, Dave was competing successfully at the State level, accruing points and top 15 rankings in the men’s division. Not bad, for just a kid!

By his 15th birthday, Dave was competing at a national level. He traveled the United States racking up wins in major tournaments. In 1990 he qualified for the Lucky Strike International Challenge of Champions making him the youngest person to ever do so. Unfortunately, he was unable to compete at age 17 because the tournament requirements dictated an age of 21yrs for entry into the event. Now how lame is that? Work your tail off to get into the event, only to have them tell you “sorry son, you’re too young”. Betcha they were just skeered of ya, Dave!

Dave was also featured in print by the Bullseye News, a national darts publication, and became the youngest ever to receive that honor at the time. I think we are going to have to go through the archives to find some pictures!

At age 17, Dave began attending college classes to pursue a degree in marketing. With travel time limited, he began competing in another sport – martial arts. This period of intense mental and physical training developed the winning attitude he displays now on the oche. Racking up wins in local and national tournaments, by 1995 Dave’s streak of consecutive first place finishes stood at an impressive 23. He was not only Michigan State Champion, but also placed runner-up in the ISKA World Championships held in Orlando, Florida.

With his formal education behind him Dave returned to competitive darts. In 1995 he made his debut as a member of the ADO national All-Star team. By 1996 he was again on the national circuit, with a string of major wins he was now ranked among the top 25 United States professional darters. In 1998 he was a finalist in the Windy City Open Men’s Singles, a world ranked event. It was also in 1998 that Dave took home his first of three Michigan State Darts Championships. He repeated this feat in 1999 making him the only man at the time to ever repeat as State Singles Champion.

By the year 2000, Dave’s second son was born and time off of darts and traveling was required once again. With two small children at home, his aim shifted from the dartboard to more domestic duties. While still competing at the local level, this was a quiet time for Dave. With a very limited schedule, he was still able to win two national tournament singles titles and a semi-final placing in the Windy City Open singles during this time.

In 2004, home responsibilities had relaxed enough to allow for more travel. By this time Dave had developed his own marketing company and could afford more time to devote to darts. In 2005, he regained his State Championship crown making him the first man to ever achieve that honor 3 times! He also rejoined the ADO national All-Star team, placing in the Top 16 of the National Championships. On a part time schedule, Dave was able to gain enough ranking points to rank 1st in his region and 39th nationally.

In early 2006, the World Series of Darts was announced. This unprecedented event featured national prime time television coverage, and a first place prize of one million dollars. Dave saw this as an opportunity to be a pioneer in the development of darts as a major spectator sport in the United States. With only 16 spots open to US players, he would have to win an open qualifier outright to gain his place on stage. With his goal in sight, Dave kicked off the year with an impressive streak of 9 singles finals out of 11 events, including winning the World Series of Darts Qualifier in Chicago. Ending the year with a ranking of 1st in his region.

Dave’s weapon of choice?.....23g Barry Twomlow Golden’s with Jocky Wilson white nylon shafts and white full size fabric flights.

DoubleTrouble is one of SEWA’s own that joined the site in August 2005 and has been a constant contributor, as well as a “behind the scenes” kinda guy. Dave just happened upon SEWA back in the days when it was still Dartplayer.net. Those golden oldie kinda days when there were only 30-40 users, but he was still quickly hooked….hmmm…I think we all can relate to that. Seems Mrs. DePriest was the happiest though. Dave had finally found a place where he could rant about darts and she didn’t have to listen to it.

Dave decided on the screen name DoubleTrouble as his moniker. As dart players, we of course think first and foremost….the man has problems hitting doubles. Alas, he says yes it is a common phrase to use in darts; however, he is also a Steve Ray Vaughn fan. And for those of you that cannot get the connection? Stevie Ray Vaughn’s band was named DoubleTrouble.

We have DoubleTrouble to thank for the new SEWA patch that was just completed in time for the New Year. We also have Dave to thank for showing us “how hotel room glasses get washed”. And somewhere out there in the great SEWA-land that we all know and love is a “story” about an elevator at a Purple Hotel in the Windy City.

When asked what is the best part of his SEWA experience? "I guess I would just like to say I am very proud to have been a part of seeing this website gain the momentum and experience the growth it's had over the past 2-3years. It’s always nice to be at a tournament and have someone let me know my advice has worked for them. But I have also received many benefits from the website myself. We are all still learning and the wealth of knowledge at SEWA is second to none in the online darts community. What other sport has a free website where world champions will give you tips, share practice scores, and encourage you the way some of the greats of our sport have on SEWA? Here we have the current World Champion post only a day after winning the biggest tournament in the world to remind everyone to keep practicing. I think that say a lot!

And on that note….I again present to you….DoubleTrouble…..SEWA’s own Dave DePriest….our January Member of the Month.

Congratulations Dave…..a deserving award to a very deserving person!

I would like to add, I met Dave at a tournament, I believe it was for top 16 in singles cricket. I beat him the first game, and had somewhat of a lead in the 2nd, when he suddenly turned it up a notch and not only beat me that 2nd game, but the 3rd as well to take the victory. We didn't know each other but when we finally got around to introducing ourselve's and as SEWA members, we talked for quite a bit. He is a first class player, as well as a first class person. I really enjoyed both playing and meeting him. Thanks for the game Dave, but not for beating me. lol. Congrats on being Jan. MOM Dave, I can't think of a more deserving person.

My only regret about Dave is that I have not had the pleasure of meeting him.

I have been chatting with Dave for a long, long time, and without doubt, I always go away the better for it.

There are many great talents and posters here. However, I make it a point to read the items he submits.

Congratulations Dave. An honor well deserved.

Congrats Dave! I remember playing at Luck of the Draws, where you were there with your Mom (Carol) when you were a teenager and being so impressed with how you played (and also ticked I was being beat by the kid, lol). It's been fun to watch over the years how you are still as good as you were then, if not better of course, and how you have represented the Grand Rapids Dart League so well over the years. Also I want to acknowledge your contribution to mentoring the youth in our league (Robert Ham for an example.) Keep up the great darts! We are proud of you!
