I am in the process of starting up a league in my area. There is already an established league here that plays on Tues Nights which is very poorly run, but has been in operation for 20 years.

I have met with host locations, and added several new ones for a Monday nigh league.

There is also a wealth of member benefits to this new league.

The main problem is the hosts are not doing there fair share in trying to get teams together or promote the additional night of league play.

I have posters hung at all the host locations, and recently made up some flyers and started putting them at gas stations etc. to try and get some more exposure.

I have also started to spread the word through the dart community, and hosted a Blind Draw Tournament, however, am having a difficult time getting players to commit.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to my world.

The only thing I can suggest is start small, and run a good quality league. People from the other leagues will notice and migrate.

A lot of bar owners are absentee owners who hire hourly wage managers who have no personal stake in whether your league is better than another or what impact darts has on their establishment. In essence everyone else (including you) is doing their job for them, and they are content to let it stay that way.

The question you are really asking is...how do I make them care enough to put some effort into the growth of the league?

If money is all that motivates, then that is your primary marketing angle.

In Jacksonville NC back in 1988 I started a small league out of the Rocky Road tavern. It was pretty easy in retrospect.

What I did was get a few friends together and hold a 'blind draw' give-a-way event. Then I went to all the local stores that had dart stuff and got donations for the prizes.

I didn't charge to play that first weekend, and everyone had a chance to win darts etc.

Then I announced that I would hold a $5 entry blind draw the next weekend that paid out to the top 3 places.

Most returned, new folks came with them.

After a while I was able to start getting folks interested in league play Smile

Of course, that all ended when I met Harry Reckline and we all joined forces at 'The New Shogun Lounge' -- those were the days Smile

Erik's comment validates my statement. He had to do eveything himself. I don't mean to be a killjoy. I too am a league coordinator who has a hard time getting bars to pull their own weight. They do after all, benefit the most from leagues. But to get them to find teams is like pulling teeth.

I try to educate the owners and managers how the ROI is better than bands, karaoke, and trivia. Some listen and get it...some don't. The ones that do, I go out of my way to help.

Can I ask where in NC?

Also Start small at a good supporter of darts pub. When it is a success word of mouth is the greatest tool.
