The rise of Facebook in darts and the decline in forums

I've been thinking a lot about Facebook's rise in the dart community and how it's impacted forums. Typically, as darts becomes more prevalent on Facebook, forums lose activity. The result is obvious but I continue to believe forums have much more to office specially in the search features and the ease of looking at older posts etc.

    What are your thoughts?

I kind of agree. Facebook definately has put a huge dent in online forums. Not just for darts, but pretty much any topic. However, I think there is still a place for Forums like this one. I follow all the popular dart groups on Facebook, Dart Discussion Group, Elite Dartplayers Assoc. of America, Darters' Anonymous, Dart Tournament Partner Finder, (I could go on and on). The thing is, often times those can become trolling spots (which used to be a bigger issue on forums). I feel like a forum like this is a better place to discuss actual techniques or tournament ideas or issues and get honest answers and opinion while still being respectful and constructive. Sometimes the ones on Facebook just turn into an arguments unrelated to the topic at hand.

I agree 100%. Our main advertiser made a comment similar to that recently

I don't think the site will ever have the traffic it did back in the day, but there is certainly room to grow and find a niche in this area. I'm into skateboarding too, and there's a big online forum for that topic. It's actually a defunct skate magazine called SLAP. Well, the mag went away and so did all of the articles but the forum is alive and well. Even with Facebook and Instagram it has become the go-to site for the latest in breaking news in the skate industry. Pro riders and company owners often use the forum for opinion of new products as well as a place to break news. Of course it has it's share of trolls and harsh responses and it has a tendency to get off topic, but it's followed all over the world and has tons of members adding content daily.

There's no reason that this forum couldn't have a similar success (like it used to have). This could become a place for companies to promote new product or get honest opinion on it. Tournament directors could get ideas for new or better formatting. Pros or sponsored players could give insight and advice or technique or practice routines and members could just talk about the sport we all love.

True. In fact, I will be doing more reviews for WINMAU and SHOT Darts soon :) Just waiting on the darts etc to arrive so I can start doing the reviews.

It's really about the members. If members find ways to make use of the site, it will thrive :) I just work at keeping it up to date and active :D

It took a little getting used to, but I'm really starting to like the updates. Especially the news feeds. I check it almost every morning for PDC and ADO news.

One thing I have found interesting is that the site traffic goes up any time someone references the site on Facebook. Strange though, is that posts don't reflect the increase in activity but members are often on the site though I usually don't see more than 145 members in a given month.

I edited that last post -- that was monthly. Here are the users daily:

As you can see we get about 4 to 7 users daily (that does not include me and only includes registered users). Not quite like the days that we used to see over a hundred daily.

On the other hand we see hundreds of real 'guests' (not robots) daily.

In fact, earlier today when there was just two members on the site there were 20 guests and 6 robots! Would love to convert those 20 guests into registered users but I suspect most of them are FB and Twitter users just checking the site for news etc and moving on from there.

I much prefer forums. DDG has some good tidbits, but a lot of stuff that I have no interest in reading, and must scroll past. DDG is like sitting in a crowded room and listening to all the conversations going on around you. There is a lot of crap that is a total waste of time. When something catches your attention you join in.

I don't have to do that here. I can pick and choose the forums I want to peruse. Much more efficient.

    Long Live SEWA.

    Amen brother! Amen!

Truth is, I've been trying to point that out to the FB crowd whenever I can. It's tough, a lot of our members are right there chatting away (and wading through the crap and losing threads etc) but many of them admit it's easier for them since they are on FB already. Kimber is there a lot and is a SEWA supporter, I see many of our members there. I suspect too, that a lot of 'visitors' are actually members who just haven't bothered to re-log in since the conversion. FB is slowly dying now though (I sure hope so) and if losing members for the first time ever. We can hope more people get tired of it and migrate right back here :D

I too miss the Pre-Facebook days here, with all of the chat, fun, exchange of ideas, etc. One thing that this forum will always have that FB will never have is the ability to go back and search topics of discussion. With FB, it's just not practical. you have to keep scrolling and scrolling. Also, it is so convenient to have everything divided into categories (Practice, Tournies, General Discussion, Etc). On FB, everything is jumbled into one big mess.
