I've just returned from a week at camp in the forests of Orgeon with my sixth graders--it's called Outdoor School. For those of you unfamiliar with the program, it's one of the most memorable experiences for students--a week away with nature and students from other more affluent neighborhoods--especially my students, many of whom are at-risk, in poverty, and have never left their own neighborhood. For many of them, it's a truly life-changing experience. I can't tell you what it's like to witness a young person--whose home life is surrounded by gangs or drugs or foster parents or neglect--become a leader among their peers, being chosen for honorable roles like the flag ceremony or tree planting, and basically seeing that life can be much more beautiful than they ever knew... Anyway, you can tell it's a moving experience to be a part of. And that brings me back to darts. One of the activities is archery...and one thing we always have in Oregon is rain; not the best combination. So, duh, it occurred to me that darts would be an excellent alternative to archery on those rainy days--just a board or two in the lodge, easy set-up/breakdown, and all the fun and valuables lessons darts can bring to kids...as folks like Rocky, SleepyKramer, DougM, and many other youth-supportive SEWAnauts know... Here's my idea. I know the ODS director, and many individual camp directors, and already spoke with them about the idea of getting dart board in the 5 camps that Portland Public School uses. They thought the idea was great! So, I'm taking it upon myself, and the powers and generosity here at SEWA to help me gather the 'goods' I need to donate boards and darts to outdoor school... I'm thinking softtip boards (maybe 10-15), softtip darts (maybe 10-15 sets), and a whole bunch of plastic soft-tips. Whose with me? My local PADA players? My fellow SEWAnauts around the globe? Let's get darts at Outdoor School! If you are interested in donating any equipment or in other ways, let me know here, or with a PM.
