As we head into tomorrow’s second round at the Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg, we do so minus two of the seeded pairings. The Welsh duo of Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton slumped to a disappointing 5-3 defeat against Singapore’s Paul and Harith Lim, while Northern Ireland’s hopes were ended early as Daryl Gurney and Brendan Dolan lost a ninth leg decider to South Africans Devon Peterson and Vernon Bouwers.

The Stars and Stripes is still flying high thanks to Darin Young and Chuck Puleo’s victory over China’s Xiaochen Zong and late replacement Yuanjun Liu. The Americans were never seriously threatened, and dropped just a solitary leg on the way to a 5-1 win.

Elsewhere, the remaining seeded teams all safely negotiated the first hurdle, with Australia the only seed to drop more than one leg. Our friends from Canada, Dawson Murschell and Jim Long, reached round 2 with a 5-3 triumph over the Italians.

Chuck and Darin return to the stage tomorrow (Saturday) night, in the second game of the evening session. This time promises to be a little tougher as they take on #8 seeds Austria (Mensur Suljovic and Zoran Lerchbacher). The session starts at 7.00pm local (1.00pm Eastern / 10.00am Pacific).
